Why do we define and provide data on a Sector of publicly funded Stem Cell companies? Stem cell research and the process of creating the production and market infrastructure to bring it the forefront of medical application is so new that we believe a review of the financial and development status of those companies that are publicly traded provides insight into how close we are to true implementation at the health care level.
You will find an alphabetical summary of each of the companies included in our Stem Cell Sector below. Criteria for inclusion are: Between 5 million and 500 million in market value; publicly traded on a North American stock exchange; and the company has, as its primary source of revenue, stem cell related activities. StemCellDigest.Net takes no position on the quality of products, the research, or the financial viability of any company in the sector. They are described here because they meet the criteria set forth and not for any other reason. If your company fits these criteria and is not included, please let us know and it will be added.
The field of stem cell research, and its resultant applications in regenerative medicine, is both rapidly growing and essentially brand new. In early 2008, when this is being written, there are no mature companies that earn their primary revenue from the application of stem cell research in regenerative medicine or from the sale of medical equipment designed for the field of regenerative medicine. Applications are developed that have to await further advances in basic research. Basic research achieves breakthroughs that require new applications, education and training at the health provider level. With time, the sequence of research, application and product development, education and market expansion will sort itself out. Meantime, the new world of regenerative medicine will continue to move forward like a car with square wheels, which explains the relatively small market value of a sector that may well revolutionize medicine and health care. Be aware that we will add companies to the description list below that are not included in the Stem Cell Sector statistics we provide on a monthly basis via post.
